FUNGAL BITES

THE MISPELT
7th February 2026 - The Alma Inn, Bolton

The week prior to the Mispelt playing had been a mither.  I was requested to keep the headline band secret due to the gaff being unable to hold the potential punters.  I had people asking what was going on, I did well to hold my tongue and when the gig came around I was mighty relieved to arrive at the venue and get matters rolling.  I have worked with the Mispelt for nigh on 2 decade, they are a reliable unit who have seen a few line-up changes, rode highs and lows and who still come and do their fine DIY bit.  The current line-up is perhaps the best, a real tight unit on fire so when they kicked off the evening’s entertainment I was salivating.
The set began with the reliable bass grumble and twang and clatter intro of 'Let Me Go' - a typical sounding sugar rush song that sets a fine heady impetus and showcases a good relish for the gig at hand.  The guitars are manipulated with adept talent, the stickwork is straight off the cuff, accurate and highly impressive.  Surely anyone with any doubts is instantaneously assured that this is going to be good. 'As Long As It's Grey' is a dirty ill-tempered dog that keeps the rapid flow gushing and the players zoned in and then we hit a home run with the always exceptional 'Panic Buy'.  A slow start, and in with a  blistering assault that reminds me of a time when the cunts really came out of the closet and showed their true colours.  There has been a real downswing in the human mush since but the DIY fight remains consistent and we stand firm.  This song may have a basic construct but it carries supreme weight.
We rattled on, more good nourishing noise fed the sonic soul and the next two highs (for me at least) were 'Ready Steady War' with its chomping hook and easy chorus and of course 'Dead Men Walking' - a sanguine song that is donkeys years old and one I am sure I have on a very ancient demo.  The key is the dashing verse and the great alteration into the chorus that clashes and compliments in one choice cruise.  Into the last trio we tumbled 'Friends Like You' is a staple classic and the closure of 'Petrol Bomb' a cultured explosion that makes sure the set finishes with a walloping punctuation mark at just the right time.  Short, sweet and leaving those converted wanting more.
And there you have my thoughts in another terse Fungal Bite - I like The Mispelt, they are darn decent dudes and this is fuckin' good DIY stuff played by folks who come, never ask for the world, have no ego and who are a joy to know - hey, simple it is, and when a band like this play in a venue such as this with a  sound guy who knows his noise, well, it can only be successful.  To add - my missus was impressed and said they should have headlined - who am I to argue?
